Quote This: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr on new ideas

Daguerreotype of Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., 1841

A man’s mind is stretched by a new idea or sensation, and never shrinks back to its former dimensions.

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

I actually like this “misquotation” of this quote better:  “A  mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions.” The quote’s from the Daddy, by the way. If you want to get to know the son, you might want to check out The Great Dissent: How Oliver Wendell Holmes Changed His Mind and Changed The History of Free Speech in America by Thomas Healy.

Last week on Nothing By The Book,  we learned that sometimes a wrench really is just a metaphor. And also, that you should not ask Internet strangers what defines (or undefines) you as a parent. Kee-rist, I was preachy. The coming week will be all about taking Jane off her pedestal.
